Blog Article: Erik Paulson

Erik Paulson - 08/02/2015

I first met Erik Paulson in Los Angeles 1996 a few days before I fought in the World Eskrima Championships in which I won the Gold. I was recommended to train with him by my instructor Bob Breen who said he was one of the best martial artists he had met. He was not wrong. Erik's skill level is through the roof, having trained with Guro Dan Inosanto for many years he was qualified in Jun Jan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, Silat, Muay Thai, Shoot Wrestling and was an avid practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

My training in 1996 with Erik was short as I also trained with Guro Dan Inosanto, Rigan Machado, Paul Vunak and was Squad Training with the British Eskrima team in preparation for the competition! He invited me to compete in an amateur Shooto event (early MMA competition) though I did not feel I was ready yet.

When I met with Erik again a few years later I was surprised that he remembered me and treated me like I had known him for years. My training with Erik continues to this day and I am honoured to be an authorised representitve of his MMA system, Combat Submission Wrestling.

This guy has trained some of the top fighters in the world at some time or another and his influence on modern Mixed Martial Arts is evident everytime I watch any of the top shows. I always chuckle to myself and point at the screen and say "Erik!" anytime I recognise his combos or methods.
